POSITION SUMMARY:
The YMCA of Memphis & the Mid-South is seeking a dynamic and organized Day Camp Site Director (for our Traditional camp) to oversee the planning, coordination, and execution of our Traditional Camps for children ages 5-12. This leadership role is perfect for someone with a passion for camp programs, working with youth, and leading a team of counselors to create a memorable and enriching summer experience. The Site Director will ensure the safety, engagement, and enjoyment of all campers, and will be responsible for the successful operation of the camp site.
Key Responsibilities
Program Leadership & Management:
- Lead and manage the daily operations of the Traditional Camp site, ensuring the implementation of engaging and age-appropriate activities that align with the weekly camp theme.
- Develop and support activity schedules that foster creativity, learning, and fun for campers.
- Adapt programs to accommodate diverse needs, ensuring all children can fully participate and enjoy their camp experience.
- Maintain high energy and enthusiasm to motivate campers and staff throughout each camp session.
Staff Supervision & Development
- Supervise, train, and mentor a team of Traditional Day Camp Counselors, ensuring they provide a safe, positive, and engaging environment for campers.
- Provide ongoing support and feedback to counselors, including regular performance check-ins and addressing any concerns.
- Foster a team-oriented atmosphere that encourages collaboration, creativity, and professional growth.
- Conduct staff meetings and training sessions to ensure alignment with camp goals, policies, and procedures.
Camper Supervision & Safety
- Ensure the safety, well-being, and positive experience of all campers under your care.
- Maintain strict adherence to YMCA safety guidelines and emergency protocols.
- Oversee daily attendance, and any camper-specific needs to ensure proper care and attention.
- Monitor camper behavior and address any concerns promptly and appropriately, while maintaining a fun and inclusive environment.
Communication & Stakeholder Engagement
- Serve as the primary point of contact for parents, guardians, and camp leadership, providing regular updates on camper progress and addressing any concerns.
- Effectively communicate expectations and policies to both staff and campers.
- Handle any issues that arise with professionalism and ensure a positive resolution for all involved.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Minimum of 21 years of age with a High School Diploma or equivalent; Bachelor’s degree in a related field preferred.
- Significant experience in summer camp settings, with at least 2 years in a leadership or supervisory role.
- Proven ability to lead, motivate, and manage a team of staff members.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to engage with children, parents, and staff effectively.
- CPR/First Aid certification required (training available if needed).
- Availability to work the full camp season (May 27, 2025 – August 1, 2025), including all weekly themed camps.
- Creativity, flexibility, and the ability to adapt to changing circumstances while maintaining high standards of safety and camper engagement.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to remain calm under pressure.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills.
