The City of Solon has an opening for a full-time Fire Chief position in the Fire Department. The Fire Chief is responsible for supervisory and administrative work in planning, organizing, directing, coordinating, controlling and implementing fire prevention, suppression and emergency medical services to prevent or minimize the loss of life and property by fire and emergency medical conditions. This position acts under the general guidance of the Mayor/Safety Director. Close working relationships based on mutual respect and trust with elected City officials are an important function.
Primary tasks and responsibilities include having a thorough knowledge of the principles, practices, methods and techniques of modern fire department administration and knowledge of fire department apparatus and equipment, and of the methods, principals, practices and techniques of fire suppression, fire prevention and rescue. This position will establish rules, regulations and standard operating procedures for emergency and non-emergency operations of the Department. Other key responsibilities include planning and implementing short-term and long-term Fire and EMS programs for the City in order to better carry out policies and goals; reviewing Departmental performance and effectiveness; and formulating programs or policies to alleviate deficiencies.
Applicants must have a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in public administration, fire science, or closely related field. Years of experience may be substituted for years of formal training. A minimum of ten (10) years of experience in fire or emergency medical service work, three (3) years of which must have been equivalent to fire Battalion Chief or higher are required. This position also requires completion of basic fire academy training and may require completion of fire prevention executive management courses, fire technology, public administration, public finance, and/or other or public service-related courses.
This position offers a starting salary range of $115,634.07 – $138,760.89. City benefits include medical, prescription, dental, and vision. In addition, benefits include membership in the Ohio Public Employer’s Retirement System, life insurance, vacation, sick leave accruals and select paid holidays.
