General Summary

Reporting to the VP of Digital Product & Innovation, the Director, User Experience Design will be responsible for supporting programs in establishing UX best practices and process, including providing hands-on support in performing UX Analysis and producing key UX artifacts. This includes designing and creating customer journeys and high-level screen designs (sketches/wireframes) by working closely with EMPLOYERS business owners and customers to help build the right product and experience. Additionally, the Director will manage and direct Product Designers and UI/UX Designers who will work integrally across the product, project, and multiple development teams, throughout the development cycle to provide guidance on implementation of the designs and modify designs as requirements change. The successful candidate will be able to thrive in an Agile development environment, demonstrating ability to manage both time and scope to fit tasks into quick development iterations.

The Director, User Experience Design will be responsible for ensuring that the next generation of digital products and experiences delight our internal and external customers and make buying and managing insurance products from EMPLOYERS intuitive and easy. This is a unique and rare opportunity to introduce and lead design thinking throughout EMPLOYERS and the product development process. In this role, this leader will help us reimagine customer-driven software development and build highly leveraged digital experiences that redefine how thousands of customers and agents engage with EMPLOYERS daily.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Establish goals for UX team, measure results, and demonstrate impact to the broader organization.
  • Drive the overall UXUX vision, roadmap, prioritization, transformation, communication and success with internal and external stakeholders for EMPLOYERS. Define and oversee programs in establishing UX best practices and process, including providing hands-on support in performing UX Analysis and producing key UX artifacts
  • Create, manage and mentor a team of experienced and knowledgeable Product Designers and UI/UX Designers, who will work integrally across the product, project, and multiple development teams, throughout the development cycle to provide guidance on implementation of the designs and modify designs as requirements change.
  • Lead design research – Implements ethnographic research by connecting directly with customers and/or internal EMPLOYERS team members to build empathy and understanding; participatory research by engaging and collaborating with customers to uncover the unknowns and redefine the problem; or evaluative research by co-designing (or collaborating) with customers to assess the usability of a proposed solution in order to discover insights, ideate a desired path to a better solution, or share findings
  • Create customer journeys and innovative experiences and solutions that meet customer needs and translates user needs into desirable, viable, and feasible solutions that improve the lives and businesses of customers.
  • Map workflows, user paths, create storyboards, wireframes, mockups, low and high fidelity prototypes and write UI specifications to support development across multiple applications and platforms
  • Manage and direct product and UI/UX designers in the creation of digital product designs and UI/UX visual screen designs (sketches/wireframes) using figma, and/or other design tools.
  • Drive product design and visual design to enhance ease of use of the solution and customer engagement to achieve business objectives and brand alignment.
  • Evaluate designs using user-centric design techniques such as UI reviews and cognitive walk-throughs
  • Ensure applications are meeting IT Accessibility Standards
  • Maintain an awareness of current trends in technology design and usability, and share this information across multiple teams
  • Work integrally across the product and multiple development teams, throughout the development cycle to provide guidance on the phases of human centered design and implementation of the designs and modify designs as requirements change
  • Thrive in an Agile development environment, demonstrating ability to manage both time and scope to fit tasks into quick development iterations

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • 8 years of UX experience, UX design, including standing up UX practices
  • 2 or more years of people management experience, leading high performing resilient design teams
  • Experience as a UX or team lead, mentoring and coaching a design team and key stakeholders in adopting UX practices
  • Advanced proficiency in current methodologies and frameworks such as Design Thinking, Primary and Secondary Research, Heuristic Analysis, Persona/Journey Mapping, Service Blueprinting, Rapid Prototyping, User Testing, and Agile Prioritization using tools such as Mural, Figma, Adobe Creative Cloud, Microsoft Office Suite, Jira and Confluence
  • Portfolio that demonstrates recent experience delivering User Experience Design, Product/Service Design, Design Thinking, and Design Research and Strategy for digital consumer and enterprise products and services.
  • Excellent communications, facilitation and storytelling skills (oral, written and visual communication) with the ability to inspire, educate and persuade
  • Functional understanding of modern CSS frameworks such as Bootstrap and/or Material Design to deliver responsive, mobile aware products
  • Understanding of 508 Accessibility standards
  • Strong cross-functional relationship building with high empathy to understand the needs of the customer and other stakeholders.
  • Ability to maintain composure in critical situations and clearly communicate with different audiences
  • Comfortable in a fast-paced environment, subject to rapid change and innovation
  • Active participant in defining workplace culture, design thinking pathways and organizational design
  • Experience in fintech and enterprise insurance technologies and solutions a plus

Work Environment

  • Remote: This role is remote, and only open to candidates currently located in the United States and able to work without sponsorship.
  • It requires a suitable space that provides a private and quiet workplace.
  • Expected Work Hours: Schedules are set to accommodate the requirements of the position and the needs of the organization and may be adjusted as needed.
  • Travel: May be required to travel to off-site location(s) to attend meetings, as necessary
