Position Summary

At PROENERGY, we emphasize a ONE-TEAM approach where our Engineering, Procurement, Construction, Start-Up, Document Controls, and Operations teams work seamlessly for our clients as a solutions provider for the power industry. We seek a Design & Technology Manager reporting directly to the VP of PowerFLX Engineering as we continue to build our in-house EPC engineering team. This manager will focus on selecting, maintaining, and coordinating our power plant design system 3D software including the material databases that drive the system. Pipe codes, piping materials, pipe support types, electrical codes, electrical cables, raceway types, structural types, etc. will all need constant review as our standards and codes change. In addition, all our multi-discipline designers (Substation, Electrical, Mechanical, Civil/structural) will report to this manager. The Design & Technology Manager will allocate resources from this designer pool as project needs dictate. You will need to work collaboratively with our integrated EPC team along with our clients to execute and provide world class, quality focused deliverables for our construction team. Your ability to adapt and be flexible will be invaluable as you coordinate multiple jobs, develop guidelines and procedures, and provide design oversight to our subsidiaries. As we lead the transition from reliance on third party engineers to building and managing a fully functional in-house engineering team your discipline expertise and technical knowledge will greatly impact the business planning to add engineering quality standards and developing our own deliverables. This position would start as hybrid role as we identify our Kansas City metro area office location.

Position Responsibilities

  • Evaluate and select software tools for their application to our power plant design with a focus on our 3D modeling suite. A comprehensive evaluation of Autodesk Plant 3D, Aveva E3D, and Intergraph Smartplant 3D is underway by the VP of PowerFLX Engineering
  • Create and manage the initial databases that feed our model including pipe codes, cable specifications, and industry sizing standards.
  • Design and route piping systems, electrical raceway, or model 3D equipment items for power plant systems including simple cycle gas balance of plant systems.
  • Plan and develop drawings for production work including problem analysis, design layout and calculations.
  • Manage and lead a team of multidisciplined designers; allocating resources based on project needs.
  • Foster high performing teams and behavior to execute projects.
  • Ability to mentor and develop team members including technical guidance to others regarding projects and disciplines.
  • Seek ways to improve customer satisfaction, the quality of the work product, and operating efficiencies.
  • Help develop, review, and implement guidelines and procedures to ensure design standardization and templating of our PowerFLX work.
  • Stay up to date with the latest technology and industry practices and find practical applications.
  • Interpret and incorporate design codes and specifications related to design requirements.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or associate degree in drafting technology, design or related fields
  • Eight (8) years of experience in related work experience
  • Advanced ability to utilize both 2D and 3D applications to prepare engineering drawings.
  • Advanced understanding of design software such as: E3D, Plant 3D, Smartplant 3D, AutoCAD, MicroStation, and Excel to develop the design deliverables. Ability to learn and effectively utilize new design software programs.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to clearly and effectively present complex information to all levels of employees, management, and clients.
  • The position requires the ability to effectively multi-task and manage numerous projects/tasks simultaneously, frequently within an aggressive and compressed schedule.
  • Independently applies knowledge and ensures compliance with quality program. Establishes related processes and promotes a culture that is conducive to quality. Provides guidance and direction to others. Supports continuous improvement and change management efforts.
  • Comfortable with change and ambiguity; adaptable, collaborative and a systems thinker
  • Proactively provides guidance and direction on department design guides, standards, systems, applicable engineering codes.
  • Advanced knowledge in the theory and practices of background discipline; competent in the fundamental concepts of other disciplines as they relate to the project team; and capable of operating related discipline design software necessary to execute production tasks.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with others including, but not limited to Project Managers, Engineers, Designers and constructability personnel in a multi-disciplined project team environment to resolve design or drawing issues as appropriate and to accomplish our goals.
  • Perform work safely and effectively. Understand and follow oral and written instructions, including warning signs, equipment use, and other policies.
  • Work during normal operating hours to organize and complete work within given deadlines. Work overtime and weekends as required.
  • US work authorization is a precondition of employment. The company will not consider candidates who require sponsorship for a work-authorized visa.
  • Successful candidate will need to satisfactorily complete pre-employment drug screen and background check

Desired Qualifications

  • Previous Lead Designer Experience in EPC Power Plant or fossil generation Industry (Any Discipline)
  • Aconex Document Controls software knowledge
  • Clear understanding of construction and constructability practices & principles
  • Working knowledge of technical aspects of the proposal and estimate process
  • Owner or Client engineering background
