A Brief Overview

The Director and Associate General Counsel provides legal counsel and services to CHOP leaders and other stakeholders on a wide range of legal issues that arise in the hospital and health care setting. The Director and Associate General Counsel is expected to work independently with minimal supervision. He or she will be expected to exercise judgment and rely on developed skills and experience in performing his/her daily job responsibilities.

This position is responsible for acting independently and in conjunction with General Counsel in providing legal advice and taking legal action for the benefit of the Hospital. The Director and Associate General Counsel will serve as the principal legal resource for legal matters arising from the Research Institute, and provides support on various other corporate, finance, compliance, patient, regulatory, purchasing and tax matters.

Areas of focus to include research contracts and transactions, research regulatory matters, intellectual property, grants and agreements, and technology transfer.

What You Will Do

  • Provide legal guidance and advice to hospital leaders and other internal stakeholders on legal issues that arise in the health care setting.
  • Provide thoughtful and sophisticated legal services on complex matters.
  • Work closely with organizational leaders, including executives and at times board members, in addressing institutional legal and risk matters.
  • Work collaboratively as part of the Office of General Counsel and with clinical, administrative and research leaders throughout the organization in identifying and developing proactive and creative solutions to legal issues.
  • Remain current on legal developments in areas of expertise and assist organization in responding to changes in laws/regulations/legal risks.
  • Provide on-call legal services for urgent and emergent hospital legal matters arising outside of traditional business hours.
  • Prepare and present trainings to internal stakeholders on relevant legal issues.
  • Assigns, oversees and actively manages the work of outside counsel in appropriate matters.
  • Perform the duties further detailed in the attached Job Description Addendum and such other legal duties as may be assigned from time to time.

Education Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (JD) Law or Jurisprudence Required

Experience Qualifications

  • At least ten (10) years employment as an attorney Required
  • Experience with research contracts and transactions, research regulatory matters, intellectual property, grants, and technology transfer preferred
  • Experience providing advice to health care clients preferred
  • Previous in-house experience Preferred

  • This position requires a demonstrated capability for legal research, analysis and reasoning, strong oral and written communication skills, an ability to identify and resolve complicated and sensitive problems creatively and with professional discretion and an ability to interact and function effectively in a competitive, professional healthcare, academic and research environment. Additionally, applicants must have excellent academic credentials, a strong work ethic, the ability to organize and prioritize work and meet deadlines, and strong interpersonal skills.

Licenses and Certifications

  • PA Law License – Pennsylvania Bar Association – within 12 months – Required
