Associate Director, Development and Alumni Relations

The University of Maryland School of Social Work (UMSSW) seeks a dynamic Associate Director of Development and Alumni Relations to lead and expand its major gift work, leadership annual giving, and alumni engagement efforts. This pivotal role will serve as a key contributor and point person on UMSSW’s annual giving strategies, alumni relations programs, and the management of the Alumni Association Board. The Associate Director will play a key role in helping to build and enhance the School’s donor pipeline, cultivating and stewarding donors –contributing to the overall growth of philanthropic support for the School.

Essential Functions

  • Leadership Giving and Major Gifts: Work closely with the Associate Dean of External Affairs (to whom this position reports), implementing comprehensive giving strategies to increase donor participation and philanthropic support of UMSSW. Identify, cultivate, and steward leadership annual giving donors, working closely with development colleagues to create personalized engagement plans and solicit gifts in support of the School’s priorities.
  • Annual Giving: In collaboration with the University of Maryland, Baltimore Office of Philanthropy, manage annual giving programs, including direct mail, email campaigns, online giving, and other donor outreach efforts.
  • Alumni Relations: Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with SSW alumni through strategic programming, communication, and engagement opportunities.
  • Alumni Association Board Management: Serve as the primary liaison to the UMSSW Alumni Board, providing strategic guidance and support. Facilitate board meetings, manage board communications, and collaborate on board initiatives.
  • Event Management: Collaborate with the Associate Dean and the Assistant Director of Stewardship and Donor Relations to plan and execute various development and alumni events, including alumni gatherings and other constituent engagement programming.
  • Donor Communications: Help lead and develop donor communication projects to articulate and build a culture of philanthropy and promote alumni and constituent engagement.

Education: Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree preferred.

Experience: Six (6) years of experience in development, alumni relations, or a related field, preferably in higher education. With at least two (3) years of managing prospects in a higher education or equivalent fundraising experience.

Additional Experience: Two (2) years in a leadership role.

Other: Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 undergraduate college credits being equivalent to one year of related experience. In instances where specific education and/or experience is required only directly related education and/or experience may be substituted.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  • Proven track record of success in annual giving, major gifts and alumni engagement.
  • Demonstrated command of fundraising principles and practices.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to build and maintain strong relationships with diverse internal and external constituencies.
  • Proficiency in CRM databases and other development software.
  • Strong organizational and event planning skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Commitment to the mission and values of the University of Maryland, Baltimore and the School of Social Work.

Hiring Range: $108,000 – $110,000, commensurate with education and experience.
