General Summary of Position:

The Assistant Director MCC/NMR/LYO/TMP is responsible for the daily operations of the 1) Materials and Chemical Characterization Laboratory (MCC), 2) Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy Laboratory (NMR), and 3) Lyophilization Laboratory (LYO), and the Thermal Mechanical Properties Laboratory (TMP). The primary responsibilities include the daily operations of these laboratories and providing technical expertise (training instrument self-users, performing chemical/structural analysis and material freeze-drying services, and assisting users in developing experimental analytical design strategies) in each of these core laboratories, and managing the operations and maintenance of major research infrastructure including a 400MHz NMR system, a suite of HPLC, GPC and LC/MS instruments, a pilot-scale Lyophilization equipment, and numerous materials characterization instruments including XRD, IPC-EOS, ICP-MS, and BET, and thermal testing equipment including DSC/TGA/DLS The Assistant Director will also oversee the establishment of a Proteomics core lab.
Minimum Qualifications (Required):
- B.S. with minimum of 10 years’ experience or M.S. with minimum of 7 years’ experience in an analytical laboratory environment is required.
- General knowledge of chemistry and biochemistry research
- Thorough understanding of high performance liquid chromatography techniques, methods, and troubleshooting using various detectors.
- Experience operating a Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectrometer, performing 1D and 2D experiments, monthly GLP protocols, and cryogen fills
- Understanding of lyophilization and scale up procedures.
- Experience with materials characterization instruments including XRD and ICP.
- Experience with thermal mechanical characterization instruments including DSC, TGA, DLS.
- Ability to assist users with protocol and method development and problem solving.
- Well versed in scientific processes
- Experience working within a research laboratory and familiarity with quality, compliance and regulatory standards
- Solid understanding and extensive working experience in sample preparation and laboratory operations
- Knowledge of CAP regulations
- 3 to 5 years of demonstrated experience in scientific (biochemical and biomolecular) instrument analytical techniques
- Experience in training students, faculty and industry researchers
- Demonstrated ability to extract complicated technical information from faculty and scientific staff and translate it to a less technical audience.
- Excellent written, organizational, and documentation skills
- Strong communication skills
- Quick learner, self-motivator, flexible, and enjoy working in a fast-paced environment

Preferred Qualifications:
- Degree preferred in chemistry, analytical chemistry, biology, biochemistry, biomedical engineering, chemical engineering, or related field.
